Wyoming became the 44th state admitted to the Union on July 10, 1890. Its name comes from the Delaware Indian word meaning "large prairie place".

Geography and Climate

Wyoming covers 97,814 square miles, making it the 10th largest state. It shares borders with Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska and Montana. The varied terrain includes plains, mountains like the Rocky Mountains, badlands and volcanic sites like Yellowstone National Park.

Wyoming has a dry continental climate with low humidity. Winters are brutally cold while summers are hot during the day and cool at night.

Economy and Industries

Wyoming relies on energy production and resource extraction. Major industries include coal, oil and natural gas production. Wyoming leads the nation in coal production. Tourism thrives through attractions like Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park and ski resorts.

Agriculture also contributes significantly through cattle ranching and production of wool, sugar beets, grains and hay.

Culture and Demographics

Wyoming has one of the lowest populations, with about 580,000 residents. It is predominantly white at 85%, followed by Hispanic/Latino and American Indian. The culture reflects a western frontier spirit along with Native American influences.

Government and Politics

The capital and most populous city is Cheyenne. The current governor is Mark Gordon, Republican. Wyoming is a strongly conservative state, having voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968.
