Newburgh is a city located in the county of Orange in the U.S. state of New York. Its population at the 2010 census was 29,801 and a population density of 2,405 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 31,524 inhabitants.
The city was created 315 years ago in 1708.
Newburgh, New York is a city in Orange County. With a population of 28,146 as of the 2020 census, it is a principal city of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown metropolitan area.
Newburgh was founded by Colonel William Bard in 1709 and was called "Bard's Town" until it was incorporated under the name of "Newburgh" in 1784. It became a port for merchant vessels traveling between New York City and Albany, which was then the capital of New York State. In 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, it was captured by British forces.
The city remained under British control until it was returned to American control with the end of fighting in 1815. In 1865, during the American Civil War, it was again occupied by Union forces; they did not leave until 1883.
In 1926, during Prohibition, speakeasies were outlawed in New York; however, alcohol could be sold so long as it was not made known publicly who purchased it.
