Cornwall was founded in 1685 by settlers from New Haven Colony, Connecticut. The land belonged to Jonathan Phelps and his son-in-law Jonathan Gregory (grandfather of Aaron Burr). The first houses were built near what is now known as "Old Town."
The town was originally called "New Canaan," but it changed its name to "Cornwall" after Crown Point, England. In 1737 a log church was built in Cornwall Center; it would later be replaced with a stone church in 1777. By 1779 there were two churches in Cornwall: one in the center of town and one in West Cornwall.
In 1784 Cornwall became part of Orange County; at that time it had 1,200 residents. The first schoolhouse was built in 1801; it burned down in 1828 with all its records. A new schoolhouse was built on the same site; it burned down again
