History

Murrieta was founded by E.S. Murrieta in 1873 as a sheep-farming community. Growth accelerated in the 1980s and 1990s as residents migrated from coastal San Diego in search of affordable homes.

Murrieta was officially incorporated in 1991. Much of the city’s development has taken place over the past three decades. Today it is considered one of Southern California’s most family-friendly communities.
