Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 60,485 and a population density of 68 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 76,199 inhabitants. Its county seat is Jefferson. The county was created 228 years ago in 1796.

Jackson County is located in northeast Georgia, about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta. The county has a rich history and natural beauty.

History

Jackson County was founded in 1796. It was named after James Jackson, a Revolutionary War veteran and Georgia political leader. The city of Jefferson became the county seat in 1802.

In the 1800s, Jackson County's economy relied on agriculture and gold mining. The county is home to the Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site. Mining ended after the California Gold Rush of 1849.

Cities and Towns

The largest city and county seat is Jefferson, with around 10,000 residents. Other towns include Commerce, Hoschton, Braselton, Talmo, and Pendergrass. Many smaller communities dot the countryside.

Jackson County is home to some of Georgia’s finest wineries like Wolf Mountain Vineyards and Frogtown Cellars. The popular Braselton Brothers Store dates back to 1889.

Outdoor Recreation

Jackson County offers beautiful parks and recreation areas like Jackson Lake and Bear Creek Reservoir. Activities include boating, fishing, hiking and camping. The Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge provides great bird watching opportunities.
