Greece is a town located in Monroe County, New York. The town was originally part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase in the late 18th century. Greece was officially founded in 1822 and was named after the country Greece, which was fighting for independence at the time.
The Erie Canal was built through Greece in the 1820s, which helped stimulate early development. The canal brought economic growth and new settlers to the town. Greece became an important port town along the canal. Many businesses were established to serve the canal traffic.
