Glassboro is a city located in the county of Gloucester in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its population at the 2010 census was 18,579 and a population density of 767 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 20,386 inhabitants.
The city was created 245 years ago in 1778.
Glassboro is a borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 18,579, reflecting a decline of 489 from the 19,068 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,454 over the 15,614 counted in the 1990 Census.
Glassboro was formerly known as Glassborough until 1908. In 1922, at least one source indicates that Glassboro adopted its current name; however, other sources indicate that it may have been called Glassboro as early as 1877 or 1878.
The present name came about when Rowan sold his tavern to his cousin John Coxe Jr., who renamed it "Glassborough" upon taking possession. He later sold it to Robert Smith who renamed it "Smith's Tavern". The name officially changed over time to "Glassboro".
Glassboro lies along an important path between Philadelphia and Cape May ferry terminals. Major highways include Route 42 (Black Horse Pike), Route 55 (Pine Barrens Highway), and Route 77 (Delsea Drive).
Glassboro is a college town sitting on 45 acres of land. The town is home to Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State College), which was founded as a normal school in 1923. This school has grown into an institution that now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. It also has an active community college campus. In addition to this educational facility, Glassboro also offers easy access to Philadelphia via Route 322 and Interstate 295.
The Royal Mallard School District was established by ordinance on July 29th 1940.
