Torrance is a city located in the county of Los Angeles in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 145,438. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 141,553 inhabitants.
The city was created 103 years ago in 1921.
The area that is now Torrance was originally home to the Tongva Native American people. In the 1800s, it became part of the Spanish land grant Rancho San Pedro.
Torrance itself was founded in 1912 by real estate developer Jared S. Torrance. He purchased over a thousand acres of undeveloped land and established the planned community of Torrance. It incorporated as a city in 1921.
The city grew rapidly in the post-WWII years. Affordable housing drew large numbers of middle-class families to Torrance in the 1950s and 60s. Aerospace and technology firms also established major operations.
