Denton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 662,614 and a population density of 267 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 919,324 inhabitants. Its county seat is Denton. The county was created 178 years ago in 1846.
Denton County is located in north-central Texas, just northwest of Dallas and Fort Worth. The county was established in 1846 and named after John B. Denton, who was killed in a skirmish with Native Americans.
The city of Denton became the county seat in 1857. It was originally settled in the 1840s as the town of Alton before being renamed. Denton was home to the State Normal College which is now the University of North Texas.
