Wayne County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 42,481 and a population density of 83 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 39,054 inhabitants. Its county seat is Wayne. The county was created 182 years ago in 1842.
Wayne County sits along West Virginia's western border, nestled between the Ohio and Big Sandy Rivers. It was established in 1842 from part of Cabell County. The county was named for General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero.
Early settlement focused on agriculture and shipping along the Ohio River. The Norfolk and Western Railway later connected Wayne County to national markets and spurred coal mining and timber industries.
