It is named after the Potawatomi Chief Wauwataesie and the Potawatomi word for firefly.

The area that would become Wauwatosa was first settled in 1834 by Samuel Hughes and Samuel Whitcomb. In 1835 they built a sawmill on the Menomonee River called Millford Mills. This gave rise to what is today known as "Old Mill Road" which runs through the center of Wauwatosa. In 1839 Edward Dunbar purchased a large tract of land from former Potawatomi chief Wauwataesie, who had settled here after selling his interest in the Wolf River lands (see Wolf River).

In 1846 George Walker platted what he called Prairieville or Walker's Prairie after he bought land from Edward Dunbar. Walker's Prairie was incorporated as part of Milwaukee on March 10, 1846 and became known as North Side Village.
