Wauwatosa is a city located in the county of Milwaukee in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Its population at the 2010 census was 46,396 and a population density of 1,353 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 48,084 inhabitants.
Wauwatosa is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 48,387 at the 2020 census. Wauwatosa is located immediately west of Milwaukee, and is a part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
It is named after the Potawatomi Chief Wauwataesie and the Potawatomi word for firefly.
The area that would become Wauwatosa was first settled in 1834 by Samuel Hughes and Samuel Whitcomb. In 1835 they built a sawmill on the Menomonee River called Millford Mills. This gave rise to what is today known as "Old Mill Road" which runs through the center of Wauwatosa. In 1839 Edward Dunbar purchased a large tract of land from former Potawatomi chief Wauwataesie, who had settled here after selling his interest in the Wolf River lands (see Wolf River).
In 1846 George Walker platted what he called Prairieville or Walker's Prairie after he bought land from Edward Dunbar. Walker's Prairie was incorporated as part of Milwaukee on March 10, 1846 and became known as North Side Village.
