Washington is a city located in the county of Beaufort in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Its population at the 2010 census was 9,744 and a population density of 417 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 9,487 inhabitants.

The city was created 248 years ago in 1775.

Washington is a city in Beaufort County, North Carolina, United States, located on the northern bank of the Pamlico River. The population was 9,744 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beaufort County. It is commonly known as "Original Washington" or "Little Washington" to distinguish it from Washington D.C.

Washington was founded by Englishman Colonel Henry Moseley in 1791 and was named for George Washington (then President). In 1794, John Gray Blount established a ferry across the Pamlico River at a landing on his own property which later became known as Blount's Landing.

Washington is home to a number of historic sites. The Old Burying Ground, established in 1720, contains the graves of many of the town's earliest settlers and members of the Council. Beaufort County Courthouse was built in 1857 with Greek Revival architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. St. Mary's Episcopal Church was built in 1874 with Gothic Revival architecture and houses one of the oldest congregations in North Carolina. The Washington Carnegie Library was constructed in 1903 with Renaissance Revival architecture and now serves as a museum for Beaufort County Community College students and faculty. 

The Washington Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and encompasses most of downtown Washington's historic buildings along Broad Street and Main Street."

Washington's downtown area has been designated by the National Park Service as a Historic District that includes several listed buildings dating back to the early 19th century. One of these buildings is the original Beaufort County Courthouse built in 1803-1804 by General Horatio Gates Trimble. Another historic landmark is First Baptist Church, which was built in 1839-1840 as a private home for George Washington Trimble (Horatio's son). Today it houses both an art gallery and a sanctuary for prayer services and other meetings held by various religious organizations in town.
