Tuscaloosa is a city located in the county of Tuscaloosa in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its population at the 2010 census was 90,468. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 102,819 inhabitants.
The city was created 204 years ago in 1819.
The area that is now Tuscaloosa was inhabited by various Native American tribes for thousands of years before European settlement. In 1816, the Alabama legislature established Tuscaloosa as the state capital. It served as the capital until 1845, when it was moved to Montgomery.
The name "Tuscaloosa" comes from the Muskogean words "tasahcuce" meaning "warriors" and "ossa-ouci" meaning "black water." The town was incorporated as a city in 1819. By the 1830s, Tuscaloosa had grown into a thriving river port and inland transportation hub for cotton and goods.
The University of Alabama
The University of Alabama was established in Tuscaloosa in 1831. It quickly became one of the largest universities in the antebellum South. The University of Alabama's football team, nicknamed the Crimson Tide, is extremely popular in Tuscaloosa and has brought national recognition to the city. The team has won 16 national championships.
