Travis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,024,266 and a population density of 387 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 1,300,503 inhabitants. Its county seat is Austin. The county was created 184 years ago in 1839.

Travis County is located in central Texas and contains the state capital of Austin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,273,954 making it the 5th most populous county in Texas.

History

Early days

Travis County was established in 1840 and named for William Barret Travis, a commander at the Battle of the Alamo. Austin has been the county seat since 1840 when it was named the capital of Texas.

Recent growth

From the 1970s onward, Travis County has experienced rapid growth as Austin became a technology and education hub. Major suburbs also developed.

Economy

Technology

Austin is nicknamed "Silicon Hills" due to its large technology industry. Major employers include Dell, IBM, Apple, Intel, and Facebook.

Education

Higher education drives the economy, with the University of Texas at Austin, St. Edward's University, and others.

Government

As the state capital, government is a major employer with many state agency headquarters located in Travis County.
