Sumner County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 160,645 and a population density of 114 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 195,561 inhabitants. Its county seat is Gallatin. The county was created 238 years ago in 1786.
Sumner County is a county located on the central northern border of the U.S. state of Tennessee, in what is called Middle Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 196,281. Its county seat is Gallatin, and its largest city is Hendersonville.
Sumner County was established on November 1786 from part of Robertson County . It was named for William Richardson Sumner (1780-1863), an early settler who arrived from Hanover County , Virginia in 1806 and built a plantation near Gallatin . The county government was established on January 1 1818 .
In its heyday during the Civil War , Gallatin was a major crossroads for trade between Kentucky , Ohio and Virginia . The city prospered as a result until after World War II when many businesses moved out of downtown. In 2008 Sumner County was named one of the top 100 small towns in America by Smithsonian Magazine.
