History
Sugar Land originated as a sugar plantation in the early 1900s. The town grew up around the sugar mill and refinery established by the Imperial Sugar Company.
After the company donated land, Sugar Land incorporated as a city in 1959. Growth accelerated in the 1980s with the development of master-planned communities within commuting distance of Houston jobs.
Economy
Major employers today are the Fort Bend ISD, Schlumberger, Crown Castle, and United Healthcare. The economy is focused on energy, downstream manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and professional services.
New master-planned communities continue attracting affluent families seeking quality schools, amenities, diverse neighborhoods and local employment.
Attractions
Popular attractions are Constellation Field minor league baseball stadium, the Smart Financial Centre concert and event venue, Sugar Land Town Square, and The Houston Museum of Natural Science branch location.
