Starr County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 60,968 and a population density of 19 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 64,266 inhabitants. Its county seat is Rio Grande City. The county was created 176 years ago in 1847.
Starr County is located in southern Texas along the Mexican border. As of the 2020 census, the population was 64,454 making it the 27th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Rio Grande City.
History
Early history
Starr County was established in 1848 and named after James Harper Starr, a Secretary of the Treasury for the Republic of Texas. Rio Grande City became county seat in 1848.
20th century
The economy was based on ranching early on. In the 1900s, oil and gas production became important industries.
