History
Springfield was founded in 1636 and grew quickly as a trading post due to its key position on the Connecticut River. It earned nicknames like “The City of Firsts” for innovations such as the first American-English dictionary and the first gasoline-powered automobile.
For a time, Springfield was even considered for the state capital instead of Boston due to its important transportation links. While that didn't happen, Springfield did flourish over the centuries as a manufacturing center known for weapons like the Springfield Rifle.

Today, Springfield is home to Springfield College and Western New England University along with financial companies like MassMutual Insurance.
