In 1755 during the French and Indian War, Native Americans attacked the area which became known as "Woodruff's Gap" because it was the site of an American Revolutionary War battle fought on September 26–27, 1778 between Continental Army troops under General George Washington and British forces under General Sir Henry Clinton during their retreat from New York City following defeat at the Battle of Monmouth. The site is marked by a monument erected by veterans from Sussex County who fought in World War I and dedicated September 26–27 each year as "Sparta Day." The monument includes a bronze statue depicting a uniformed.
