Southaven is a city in DeSoto County, Mississippi, United States. It is a principal city in Greater Memphis. The 2010 census reported a population of 48,982, making Southaven the third-largest city in Mississippi and the second most populous suburb of Memphis.
The city's name comes from two sources: Southaven is part of the Southaven–DeSoto urban area, which is anchored by the city of Southaven; and it is located within DeSoto County.
The city of Southaven was founded in 1958 by Robert W. Taylor and his wife, Sandra. The Taylors were originally from Mississippi and moved to the Memphis area after falling in love with the area during a vacation to nearby Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
The Taylors purchased several hundred acres of land from the estate of the late Colonel A.B.C. Wharton, who had been a successful cotton farmer and cattleman prior to his death in 1955 at age 92. The Taylors settled in Southaven because they felt it was an ideal location for their plans to build a new community that welcomed people from all backgrounds and economic levels.
Southaven is located about 16 miles south of downtown Memphis and 30 miles north of downtown Jackson. It is bordered on its west side by the Mississippi River and on its east side by the Wolf River Harbor. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 107.6 km² (41.7 mi²), of which, 106.1 km² (40.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it (1.44%) is water.
Southaven is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Its population was 55,026 at the 2020 census.
