Randall County was established in 1876 and named after Horace Randal, a Confederate brigadier general. The economy started as strictly ranching and farming.
In the late 1800s, rail lines connecting Chicago to Texas expanded through the county, fostering growth in Canyon. The discovery of oil and gas in the 1920s further spurred development.
