History

Provo was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1849, following leader Brigham Young's direction. The city was named after explorer Etienne Provost.

It served as territorial capital of Utah for a brief time in the 1850s. Provo later became the site of Brigham Young Academy, which eventually grew into BYU.
