The township was created 331 years ago in 1693.

Piscataway is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The township is a bedroom suburb of the New York metropolitan area, located within the heart of the Raritan Valley region. 

The name "Piscataway" is derived from Algonquian language words that mean "town near waters", which refers to two streams that were once called the Great Piscataqua and Little Piscataqua.

Piscataway Township was originally created on April 13, 1688, and was formally incorporated as one of New Jersey's first 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. Portions of the township have been taken to form Franklin Township (February 27, 1838), Dunellen (April 9, 1838), Middlesex Borough (March 5, 1914) and South Plainfield (March 22, 1922).

Piscataway Township's geographic borders are almost identical to those of Piscataway's ZIP code (08854), which is also used by adjacent Edison Township in Middlesex County and Franklin Township in Somerset County.
