Perry County is a county located in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,591 and a population density of 6 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 8,687 inhabitants. Its county seat is Marion. The county was created 204 years ago in 1819.

Perry County is in the central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,511. Its county seat is Marion. The county was established in 1819 and is named in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry of Rhode Island and the United States Navy.

Perry County is a rural county located in the eastern region of Alabama's Black Belt and shares its northern border with Georgia. It lies along the western edge of the Talladega National Forest, which offers several recreational opportunities including hiking, fishing, camping, and more. The forest also contains two lakes: Lake Wedowee and Weiss Lake.

The county has a thriving tourism industry related to its historic sites such as Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Historic Site, which commemorates French-British conflict during colonial times; and Moundville Archaeological Park, which features earthworks built by Native Americans between 1000–1450 AD before European contact.

Perry County Courthouse

The county is home to the Perry County Courthouse, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The courthouse was constructed in 1859 and is a two-story brick building with a three-story tower. The courthouse represents an excellent example of Greek Revival style architecture.

The courthouse was used by Confederate troops during the Civil War and suffered damage from Union artillery shells that were fired at it. It was repaired after the war and continued to be used until 1975 when it was replaced by a new facility.

In addition to being Alabama's oldest courthouse still in use, it is also one of its most beautiful. The building has been featured on postcards and calendars over the years but has never been restored or modernized. Visitors can tour this historic landmark during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM, except for holidays and special events (when tours are not available).
