Old Forge was incorporated as a borough on April 7, 1891 from part of Union Township. The community was named for its location near the headwaters of the Lackawanna River. Old Forge was originally known as "Gowanus" after the creek that flows through it, but later took its name from an iron forge established there by James Ewing in 1798. The village is served by a daily newspaper called the "Lackawanna Valley Times", which has been published since 1882 and is owned by LVM Media Group Incorporated.

The borough is named for an old forge built by the early settlers who came from New England. At one time there were several forges in the area; however, only one remains - the Old Forge Farm Forge Museum.
