Okmulgee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 40,069 and a population density of 22 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 38,234 inhabitants. Its county seat is Okmulgee. The county was created 117 years ago in 1906.

Okmulgee County is located in east central Oklahoma. The county was created in 1907 when Oklahoma became a state. The county seat is Okmulgee.

The area was originally inhabited by the Creek Nation. In the 1830s, the Creek were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma from their lands in the southeastern United States. This journey is known as the Trail of Tears.

In the late 1800s, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad was built through the county. The town of Okmulgee was established along the railroad route.

Okmulgee is the largest city in the county. Other towns include Beggs, Dewar, Henryetta, Morris, and Schulter.

Economy

Agriculture has historically been an important industry in Okmulgee County. Major crops include wheat, soybeans, and hay. Livestock production is also significant.

The county has a diverse manufacturing economy today. Major employers include manufacturers of fabricated metal products, machinery, plastics, rubber, and transportation equipment.

The energy industry has a presence in Okmulgee County as well. Natural gas pipelines run through the county.

Attractions

Okmulgee County attractions include Dripping Springs State Park and the Okmulgee County Historical Society Museum.

The Okmulgee National Wildlife Refuge provides opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The refuge was established in 1963 and encompasses 7,022 acres.

Geography

Okmulgee County covers an area of 769 square miles. The eastern part of the county is located in the Ozark Highlands region, characterized by forests and rolling hills. The Deep Fork River runs through this area.

The western section of Okmulgee County is prairie land, part of the Cross Timbers ecoregion. The Deep Fork River and Okmulgee Lake are the major bodies of water in the county.
