Norman is a city located in the county of Cleveland in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Its population at the 2010 census was 110,925 and a population density of 226 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 125,762 inhabitants.

The city was created 133 years ago in 1890.

Norman is a city located 20 miles south of downtown Oklahoma City in the central part of the state. With over 125,000 residents, Norman is the third-largest city in Oklahoma.

History

Settled in 1889 during the Land Run, Norman was one of the original frontier towns in the Oklahoma Territory. The city was named after one of the leaders of the Land Run, Abner Norman.

Norman was incorporated in 1891 and selected as the site for the University of Oklahoma in 1893, helping stimulate early growth. In the 20th century, the economy diversified beyond agriculture into aerospace and tech.

Today, Norman enjoys prosperity driven by education, technology research, and steady population growth as a hub between major Texas and Midwest cities.

As home to the University of Oklahoma, education and research are linchpins of Norman’s economy. The university is the top employer in the city.
