New Albany is a city located just north of Columbus, Ohio. With a population of around 11,000 people, New Albany is considered a suburb of the state capital.
The city was founded in 1837 and was named after the capital of the U.S. state of New York, Albany. New Albany was originally a farming community, but developed into a more residential area over time.
History and Development
New Albany was first established along the route of the Walnut Creek. The area was attractive to settlers because of its proximity to Columbus and its abundant natural resources like water, timber and fertile soil.
In the late 1800s, New Albany became a center of activity with the arrival of the railroad and establishment of a railroad station. The railroad enabled further growth, and New Albany was incorporated as a village in 1865.
Major development occurred in New Albany in the 1970s with the construction of major roadways like State Route 161. Large areas of farmland were transformed into residential subdivisions and shopping centers. This marked New Albany's transition from rural village to affluent Columbus suburb.
