The city was created 143 years ago in 1880.
Midland is a city in western Texas, about halfway between El Paso and Fort Worth. With over 146,000 residents, it is the largest city in the Permian Basin region. Midland serves as the county seat for Midland County.
History
Midland began as a midway stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881. It soon developed into a regional hub for ranching and agriculture. Midland saw its first major population and economic boost with the discovery of oil in the Permian Basin in the 1920s.
The oil and gas industry continues to dominate Midland's economy today. Multiple oil booms throughout the 20th century led to rapid development and population influxes.
