Maverick County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,258 and a population density of 16 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 58,378 inhabitants. Its county seat is Eagle Pass. The county was created 153 years ago in 1870.
Maverick County is located in southwestern Texas along the Rio Grande, bordering Mexico. It was established in 1856 from land previously belonging to Kinney County. The county was named for Samuel Maverick, a rancher and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
The city of Eagle Pass has been the county seat since 1856, when Fort Duncan was established there to guard the border. The fort later became the town of Eagle Pass, named for the eagles seen flying over the river.
