Manchester is the most populous city in New Hampshire and the center of the state's most populous metropolitan area. It is located along the banks of the Merrimack River in Hillsborough County.

Major local employers include Elliot Hospital, Southern New Hampshire University, FairPoint Communications, and the University of New Hampshire at Manchester.
