Madison is a city located in the county of Morris in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its population at the 2010 census was 15,845 and a population density of 1,414 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 17,612 inhabitants.
The city was created 134 years ago in 1889.
Madison is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 16,937.
Madison is located on the western edge of Morristown and is a part of the Morristown metropolitan area. It is New Jersey's newest municipality having been incorporated on March 15, 1868. The Borough of Madison was named after U.S. President James Madison by founders who had read about his role in the creation of Morristown National Historic Park.
Madison is home to several historic sites including the Old Mine Road and Old Barracks Museum which were recently added to Morristown National Historical Park. The Old Mine Road was an important transportation route during colonial times and played a key role in the American Revolutionary War by providing access to vital iron mines near present-day Rockaway. The Old Barracks Museum is located in a building constructed in 1766 that served as headquarters for General George Washington during his invasion of nearby Jockey Hollow during December 1776 - January 1777
Madison borders Morristown to the north, Chatham Township to the east and south, Rockaway Township to the southwest and west and Morris Township to the northwest. Madison's downtown area is centered around its train station which connects it to Morristown's downtown and other destinations throughout New Jersey via NJ Transit's Morris & Essex Lines.
