The county is named after Madison County, Alabama, where many early settlers came from. The county covers 2,168 km² and has a population of 16,393 (estimated 2020).
Madison County is located in northeastern Arkansas between Memphis and Little Rock. It includes part of the Buffalo River area, which was made famous by William Faulkner's novel "The Reivers," and is known for its scenic beauty and outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking. There are several lakes in Madison County including Lake Catherine State Park on Lake Catherine at an elevation of 1,719 feet above sea level, which has facilities for camping, fishing and picnicking along with hiking trails through wooded areas to picnic areas overlooking Lake Catherine itself; Lake Greeson State Park on Lake Greeson near Hector at an elevation of 1,267 feet above sea level with camping facilities for tents only; Horseshoe Lake State Park on Horseshoe Lake.
