Located in the San Joaquin Valley, Madera is the principal city of the Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the Fresno-Madera-Hanford Combined Statistical Area.

Madera is located at 83 m (272 ft) elevation in California's San Joaquin Valley. It is located at 37°16'N 120°4'W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 42.67 km² (16 sq mi). The National Weather Service has maintained a weather station at Madera since 1894.

The current station was built in 1963 and has been in operation since then. With its location near the Sierra Nevada Foothills and relatively high elevation for this region, Madera has colder winters than most other locations nearby. It is also known for being foggy in the mornings occasionally during winter months and it is called "Madera Fog." Average temperature in January is 21°F (-6°C), making it one of coldest spots within Central California; however, temperatures can drop down to 12°F (-11°C).
