Independence was settled in the 1820s and named after the Declaration of Independence. It emerged as a starting point for westward migrations like the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails.

Settlers outfitted their wagon trains in Independence before embarking west. This gave rise to a bustling commercial center and economy focused on outfitting travelers.
