Early Settlement
The first European settlers arrived in the 1600s, joining Native American Lenape tribes along the harbor. The town was named after Englishman Richard Huntington and formally incorporated in 1653.
Huntington began as an agricultural community, with fishing and oystering along the harbor. Early industry focused on lumber, gristmills, and brickworks. Huntington Harbor enabled trade and shipbuilding.
In the 1800s, rail lines and trolley systems were developed to better connect Huntington to New York City markets. This improved commerce, tourism, and commuting.
Growth and Development
Like many Long Island towns, Huntington saw enormous population growth after World War II due to suburban sprawl from NYC. Modern Huntington emerged during the massive suburban expansion of the 1950s and 60s.
** Significant postwar community developments** include the Melville business park, the expansive Walt Whitman Shops mall, and the Long Island State Veterans Home.
Cultural institutions like The Paramount concert hall, Heckscher Museum, and Cinema Arts Centre established Huntington as a center for arts and entertainment.
