Galveston is an island city on the Gulf Coast of Texas. It’s known for Moody Gardens, where giant glass pyramids house sharks, monkeys and other animals. Amusement rides and restaurants line Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier on the south shore. West is bird-rich Galveston Island State Park, with its trails, kayak launches and fishing spots. Stewart Beach and East Beach are on the island’s eastern end.
Galveston’s nickname is “The City of Six Flags,” because of the many flags that have flown over it during its history: Spanish (1519–1821), Mexican (1821–1836), Republic of Texas (1836–1845), Confederate States of America (1861–1865), United States (1845–present). The first Texas colony was founded here in 1816 by Louis LaLime and Robert Cavelier de la Salle.
As a result of its proximity to mainland Texas and Louisiana, Galveston has been vulnerable to hurricanes since its inception as a major port. Hurricanes Carla in 1961, Alicia in 1983 and Ike in 2008 caused catastrophic damage to the city's infrastructure
