Eugene: The second most populous city in Oregon. It is located in the Willamette Valley in western Oregon. Eugene is a city located in the county of Lane in the U.S. state of Oregon. Its population at the 2010 census was 156,185 and a population density of 1,366 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 173,236 inhabitants.

The city was created 178 years ago in 1845.

Eugene is a mid-sized city in Lane County located along the Willamette River in the western part of Oregon. With a population of about 173,000, it is Oregon’s third most populous city after Portland and Salem. Eugene serves as the county seat and cultural hub for the surrounding area.

History of Eugene

The original inhabitants of the area were the Kalapuya Native Americans. Eugene was established in 1853 by Eugene Franklin Skinner and named after its founder. It was incorporated as a city in 1862 as the population continued growing.

Eugene prospered in the late 19th century as a lumber town due to the abundant natural resources in the region. The timber industry drove much of Eugene’s early economy.

University of Oregon

In 1876, the University of Oregon was established in Eugene, which helped develop the city into a more cultured, cosmopolitan area. With over 22,000 students, UO remains the flagship university in Oregon and Eugene’s largest employer.

Recreation and Outdoors

Eugene’s location in the southern Willamette Valley provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. The city contains multiple public parks and nature trails along the Willamette River. Eugene also has miles of running trails and hosts running events like the Eugene Marathon.

Outdoor activities like hiking, biking, rafting, and kayaking are popular due to Eugene’s proximity to rivers, forests, and the Cascade Mountains. Eugene’s climate is mild, wet, and temperate throughout much of the year.

Arts and Culture

Eugene has a thriving local arts, music, and cultural scene. Local theaters, the Hult Center, and the Eugene Symphony anchor the arts. Eugene also has a funky, progressive vibe with lots of unique restaurants, cafes, and small businesses. Annual events like the Oregon Country Fair attract visitors from around the region.
