East Hampton is a small unincorporated community located in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
The area was first settled in 1634 as part of Elizabeth Cittie. It was originally named New Towne. In 1790, East Hampton became the county seat of Elizabeth City County.
The community grew with the establishment of Fort Monroe in 1819. Fort Monroe brought military personnel and families to settle in East Hampton. It became a thriving community that supported the nearby army base.
