Coryell County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 75,388 and a population density of 28 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 76,737 inhabitants. Its county seat is Gatesville. The county was created 170 years ago in 1853.
Coryell County is located in Central Texas, about halfway between Dallas and Austin. The county was established in 1854 and named after James Coryell, a frontiersman and Texas Ranger.
The city of Gatesville became the county seat in 1854. It was named after Confederate General Hiram Gates, a hero of the Battle of Mansfield during the Civil War.
