Compton is a city located in the county of Los Angeles in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 96,455. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 93,967 inhabitants.

The city was created 136 years ago in 1888.

Compton is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, founded in the late 1800s as an agricultural community. It was incorporated as a city in 1888 and by the 1950s had developed into a predominantly middle-class suburb.

Major demographic changes occurred during the 1970s and 1980s. African Americans became the majority population, reaching over 90% by the late 1980s. Compton struggled with poverty, crime, and gang violence during this time. However, community-driven revitalization efforts began in the 2000s.
