It is named after Christopher Columbus and stretches across 1,678 km² of land. The county was founded in 1786 and was named after Christopher Columbus by George Clinton, who was then Governor of New York State.
The county seat is Hudson, which has a population of 6,812 as of 2010 census. The next largest town is Chatham with 2,380 people living there as of 2010 census data.
