Clinton County is a county located in north-central Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1839 and named after DeWitt Clinton, who was the governor of New York in the 1820s. The county seat and largest city is Lock Haven.
Geography
Clinton County covers an area of 898 square miles. It is located in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians region of Pennsylvania. The county's terrain is characterized by forested mountains, valleys, and rolling hills. The West Branch Susquehanna River flows through the middle of the county.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, Clinton County had a population of 38,684 people. The racial makeup of the county is 95.7% White, 1.6% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.6% Asian, and 1.3% two or more races. The largest ancestry groups are German (35.9%), Irish (16.2%), Italian (9.3%), and English (6.4%).
Economy
The economy of Clinton County relies largely on manufacturing, health care, retail trade, and education. Major employers in the county include Lock Haven University, Jersey Shore Steel Company, and Susquehanna Health. Agriculture also plays a significant role, with dairy farming and timber harvesting being important industries.
