Chillicothe is a city located in the county of Ross in the U.S. state of Ohio. Its population at the 2010 census was 21,901 and a population density of 798 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 21,647 inhabitants.
The city was created 221 years ago in 1802.
Chillicothe is a city in and the county seat of Ross County, Ohio, United States. Located along the Scioto River 45 miles south of Columbus, Chillicothe was the first and third capital of Ohio. It is the only city in Ross County and is the center of the Chillicothe, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Chillicothe's population was 21,668 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which includes Marion and Ross counties.
The city has a mayor-council form of government with a mayor elected every four years. A council president is selected from among its members to assist with legislative functions. The government has been presided over by Mayor Tom Rader since January 2015; he was re-elected for his fourth term in November 2017 and will serve through December 2020.
The Chillicothe area was settled in 1795 by General Israel Ludlow and Colonel Joseph Vance (a Revolutionary War veteran), who both previously lived in Cincinnati, where they were justices of the peace. They each built large log cabins on opposite sides of High Street at its intersection with Water Street downtown.
The elevation of Chillicothe is 192 meters above sea level, which makes it one of the highest cities in Ohio. The area code for this city is Area code 740.
