Bowie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 92,565 and a population density of 39 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 93,481 inhabitants. Its county seat is Boston. The county was created 184 years ago in 1839.

Bowie County is located in northeastern Texas near the border with Arkansas and Oklahoma. It was established in 1840 and named for James Bowie, the legendary knife fighter who died at the Alamo.

The area was settled in the early 1800s by American pioneers moving west. By the 1830s, steamboats were traveling up the Red River to bring goods and settlers to the frontier. The county economy was based on cotton, livestock, and river trade.

The Red River Army Depot opened in 1941 and became a major employer for the defense industry. The depot occupies over 10,000 acres in Bowie County.

Major Cities and Attractions

The largest city and county seat is Texarkana, with a population split between Texas and Arkansas. Other cities include:

• New Boston - Known as the "Cowboy Capital of Northeast Texas"
• Wake Village - Home to George H. Carroll Museum and Civil War artifacts
• De Kalb - A smaller town with roots in the railroad industry

Outdoor recreation is popular at Lake Wright Patman for boating, fishing, camping and hiking.
