About
Bethlehem is a city located in the county of Northampton in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a city along the Lehigh River, split between both Northampton and Lehigh counties in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. It's about 90 miles north of Philadelphia and 200 miles west of New York City. As of the 2020 census, Bethlehem had a total population of 75,781—making it the eighth largest city in Pennsylvania.
Bethlehem was founded in 1741 by Moravians who traveled from Europe to escape religious persecution. The original settlers arrived at what would become known as Bethlehem on Christmas Eve, which is why it's also known as "Christmas City USA."
Bethlehem has been an important industrial center since its founding. It was home to many factories that produced textiles, clothing, leather goods and iron products. Today, however, it's most famous for its Christmas-themed attractions like the National Museum of Industrial History and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works.
Bethlehem is split between both Northampton and Lehigh counties, but its heart is in Northampton County—that's where you'll find most of the shops, restaurants and other businesses that make this city great.
