Berne is a city located in the county of Adams in the U.S. state of Indiana. Its population at the 2010 census was 3,999 and a population density of 742 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 4,262 inhabitants.
The city was created 172 years ago in 1851.
Berne is a city in Monroe and Wabash townships, Adams County, Indiana, United States, located 35 miles south of Fort Wayne. The population was 4,173 at the 2020 Census. Berne is widely known for its Swiss heritage, architecture and culture, and for its status as the "Furniture Capital of Indiana."
The city was founded in 1837 by Swiss immigrants from Canton Bern who were looking for land to settle. They named their new community after their home town of Bern. In order to preserve the Swiss culture that has been maintained through the generations, Berne has preserved many culturally significant buildings including 15 log cabins that were built between 1830 and 1860.
Berne has many attractions including the Historic Downtown area where you can visit local shops and restaurants while enjoying all that Berne has to offer. You can also learn more about Berne's history at The Swiss Village Museum which features several buildings that were brought over from Switzerland and reassembled here in Berne. You can also take part in some fun activities like tubing on Flat Rock Creek or shopping at one of many antique stores or gift shops that line Main Street!
