Yakima is a city located in the county of Yakima in the U.S. state of Washington. Its population at the 2010 census was 91,067. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 94,322 inhabitants.
The city was created 177 years ago in 1846.
Yakima is located in south central Washington state, situated along the Yakima River. The area was originally home to the Yakama Nation people. In the 1850s, settlers established a trading post called Yakima City around the Catholic St. Joseph's Mission.
Yakima City was officially incorporated in 1883. The Northern Pacific Railroad connecting the area in 1884 helped Yakima grow into an agricultural hub and trading center. By the early 1900s, orchards, hop fields and vineyards made Yakima Valley a top fruit producing region.
