Williamson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 422,679 and a population density of 724 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 617,855 inhabitants. Its county seat is Franklin. The county was created 225 years ago in 1799.
Williamson County is located in central Texas, north of Austin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 590,551, making it the 5th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Georgetown.
History
Early days
The county was established in 1848 and named after prominent judge and soldier Robert M. Williamson. Georgetown was designated the county seat in 1851. The economy was based on subsistence agriculture and cattle ranching.
Recent growth
Williamson County has experienced rapid growth since the 1970s as the nearby Austin metro area has expanded. Suburban development transformed the area from rural to urban/suburban.

Technology
High-tech manufacturing and research drive the economy today, especially in computers, software and circuits. Top employers include Dell, IBM, Emerson Electric Co., and Applied Materials.
Healthcare
The healthcare and social assistance industry has grown significantly as Austin regional hospitals expand into the county.
