Wichita County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 131,500 and a population density of 80 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 133,205 inhabitants. Its county seat is Wichita Falls. The county was created 166 years ago in 1858.
Wichita County is located in north Texas along the Oklahoma border. As of the 2020 census, the population was 131,613 making it the 12th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Wichita Falls.
History
Early days
The county was established in 1858 while Texas was still a state. It was named after the Wichita Native American tribe. Wichita Falls became the county seat in 1882.
20th century growth
Wichita Falls grew rapidly in the early 1900s with the arrival of railroads. Oil was discovered in 1919, further boosting the local economy. Sheppard Air Force Base opened in 1941.
Recent trends
The population declined in the late 1900s as the oil economy slowed. Recently it has stabilized due to diversification of the economic base.
